Unifying the country

All this talk about 'unifying' the country being mouthed by the administration is hardly reflected in the rantings of such columnists as Dick Yarborough and Cal Thomas, to name a few that regularly contaminate the editorial page of this newspaper. Yarborough, the self styled Don Rickles of the conservative right,
seems to revel in debasing and de-humanizing men like senator Ted Kennedy and President Jimmy Carter and consequentally insulting the millions of American voters who supported them. Even Colin Powell, because of his reasoning reluctance to go marching off to war, is now being defiled by these right wing demagogues. Somebody needs to tell Yarborough and company that their dog and pony shows are about as unifying and beneficial to this country as confining Flu shots to what Yarborough himself refers to as his constituency of "right wing, evangelical, homophobic boobs".i Guess there is something to be said for his brand of humor, after all. I know, I know, I'm soundng like the pot calling the kettle black, but such inspirational out-pourings of acidic drek can be catching. I do find it puzzling that anyone, regardless of his political agenda, can heap such abuse on Jimmy Carter,
probably the most decent man ever to sit in the White House, but then again, I don't expect decency is in the lexicon of men like Dick Yarborough, may he be granted a paper route soon.
