Katrina

Mr. H.E. Allgood Jr.,. in his reaction to Patricia Ann Pickering's letter in which she faulted the federal government for their shortcomings in dealing with hurricane Katrina, said he 'almost' threw up. Well, after reading Mr.
Allgoods letter I succeeded where he failed. He actually
placed the blame on the victims for being there in the first place. He goes on to say, "I really have to question why anyone would live in a city that is 6 feet below sea level and not carry the right insurance". Right insurance? Most of those poor folks that were left behind were barely able to pay their monthly rent, let alone carry insurance. As to why they were there in the first place, try accepting the fact that
many of them were born there and never lived anywhere else. You may as well tell people in California to pack up and head for the hills because they live on a fault line that may produce a massive earthquake....someday. In casting some of the blame for the slow evacuation of New Orleans on the Mayor of that city, Mr. Allgood has a valid point, however in absolving the president and his administration from all blame for their response, he only walks the party line and talks the party talk. He says. "Freedom of choice is a hallmark of this great country and we should never be willing to give it up to the government".
How that cliche applies to to the victims of Katrina escapes me, but I'm sure the Administration heel clickers will be happy to enlighten me. To the presidents credit, he accepted the responsibility for the governments failure to repond adequately and quickly enough to the disaster. He called the governments response unacceptable. Did Mr. Allgood not pick up on that? Yes, the Mayor of New Orleans
and the governor of Louisiana have some explaining to do as well, but to cast blame on those poor misbegotten people clinging to roof tops five days after the hurricane struck and
implying that they were stupid for placing themselves in harms way by living there......well, I guess there's no way to top that one. Mr. Allgood scored some good points in pointing out the deficiencies in local and state government.
He just could'nt bring himself to include the boys at the top
George Morin
Auburn.
