The speech
The president's speech put me in mind of the song, "if you wish upon a star", It was fairly predictable in that Bush continued to present his justification for going to war in Iraq and painted his usual up-beat prediction of a successful conclusion. I think he resonated with his congressional audience when he called for an end to our dependancy on Middle East oil and the development of alternate fuels as well as
better utilization of what is available. This is an old theme and past presidents, including Jimmy Carter, have touched on it in previous state of the union addresses. The major oil companies continue to reap huge profits and its hard to imagine their willingness to put the welfare of the nation before their greed....unless it dawns on them that if THEY take the initiative in development of these new alternate fuels, they might just succeed in making even greater profits. The bottom line here is 'more'.
As state of the union messages go, the president gave a pretty good account of himself, but in the end, when the stands are empty and the dust has cleared, it probably won't change too many minds. We've heard it all before, promises, resolutions and hope. It was a poignant moment when the president called upon the congressmen to put aside their anger and work to-gether.However else this president will be remembered, bringing the parties to-gether will probably not be high on the list, but as the saying goes, it ain't over til it's over"
