Ideology in a nutshell

Cal Thomas's recent column, "Ideology in short supply" probably personifies all that turns me off about this man's political philosophy. It isn't so much his rigid adherence to a single-minded approach to what is right and wrong with how the country is being run, as much as it is his acrimonious attacks on specific groups not in lockstep with 'the word according to Cal'.

In his rage against the Republicans in congress he feels are not hewing to the party line, he likens them to Democrats, all of whom he regards as total losers. He credits them with absolutely nothing and in doing so he disparages roughly half of the citizens in this country who vote for them. His rhetoric has become so repetitious and strident that it's almost embarrassing coming from a man of his reputed intelligence.

For example, to quote from his column:
"The Democratic policy in Iraq is to get out" -- whose policy was it to go there in the first place?
"The Democratic economic policy is higher taxes" --oh how we just love to pay higher taxes
"more spending and bigger government" -- Mr. Thomas has really put the tail on the wrong donkey here, hasn't he?

To hear Thomas tell it, nobody in Washington is worthy of re-election and in that,he may not be too far off center. But in the meantime, can we not have a change in ideological rhetoric? As a life-long Democrat, I do not relish higher taxes, excessive spending, or bigger government. As a human being and an American, I also do not relish needless and stupid life-squandering ventures where even angels fear to tread.

Cal is right about one thing, we need new blood in Washington...and I might add, a lot less on the streets of Baghdad.
