Right out of Hollywood
Just when we thought nothing coming out of Iraq could surprise us, up popped Saddam's ludicrous offer to save our bacon and restore order in that poor beleaguered country. Well, outrageous maybe, but I'm not too sure about ludicrous. It might serve the insurgents right if we were to unleash the old despot and let them sort it out between them.
How much worse can it get? On the one hand we have a man being tried for crimes against his people, although Saddam might argue the claim that Shiites and Kurds were indeed HIS people. He is specifically charged with sanctioning the killing of around 140 Shiites whom he claimed were invoved in an assassination attempt on his life. He is also charged with unleashing a biological attack on the Kurds whom he claims were revolting against his government. While it is very likely that Saddam is guilty as charged, You have to wonder how the killing he is reputed to be responsible for stacks up against the number of Iraqis and coalition troops that have died as a result of the invasion. Of course I don't seriously expect that the brutal old tyrant will be turned loose to lead a spearhead against the insurgency any time soon to bring peace and tranquility to the region, but can there be anything NOT on the table in this crazy quilt that is Iraqi politics? When it comes to wild and wooly scenarios involving Iraq,we have 'been to the mountain' and what a slippery downhill ride it continues to be. Releasing Saddam Hussein may be a an absurd idea, but then, California may be looking for a new Governor soon.
