A backward look
I wonder, as Saddam prepares to 'make his way forward' to the gallows, if he is having the last laugh after all. Despite all the assumptions that conditions in Iraq could never be worse than they were under his rule, a certain amount of doubt prevails. Certainly the infrastructure of the country is in a lot worse shape and there has been a rapid depletion of the citizenry. While the Sunnis ruled the roost during his reign, they appear to be getting about as good as they gave now that the Shiites are holding the reins of power. The only thing that seems to have changed is our being trapped in the middle of this mess. It rattles the mind to see that people of the same ethnic origin who have lived side by side for hundreds of years, cannot stop killing each other in Allah's name. Perhaps when Saddam Hussein faces the ultimate court of judgment, he can find solace in knowing that we are still here trying to pick up the pieces, and trying to find which way is forward.
