Yankees come home
If memory serves, the reason for invading Iraq was to remove Saddam from power and uncover and destroy all weapons of mass destruction. Well, as the old saying goes, "one out of two ain't bad".The fact that no weapons of mass destruction were found left us with egg on our face, but still there was satisfaction in knowing that the Iraqi people were free of a tyrannical regime and able to form a new, democratic government of their choosing.
Well, that was the administration's game plan and most of us bought into it.......at least until it became obvious that the Iraqi people were not united as to what constituted a free and democratic government and who should wield the power. Four years have gone by and that determination remains unresolved and despite claims to the contrary, civil war rages throughout the land. Over 3000 American soldiers and marines have died in a failed mission that remains an enigma to this day. The real enigma is how do you defeat an enemy that is at war with itself? As any good fisherman will tell you, there comes a time when you have to cut bait when the fish refuse to bite. It seems that only the arrival of another Saddam Hussein
with the ruthless power to keep the peace and restore order may be inevitable. We certainly hope that never happens and that we can accomplish through negotiation with all parties concerned, what we have been unable to accomplish through the barrel of a gun.
