Standoff
The stand-off between the President and the congress regarding whether or not to set a time table for withdrawing the troops from Iraq is a lose lose situation whichever way you look at it. If anything, the violence seems to be escalating daily and nobody is projecting anything resembling a happy outcome. Setting aside all of the rhetoric regarding the validity or lack thereof of our being there is paramount at this time, because we ARE there and the sooner we can find a way to change that status the better. Every day that passes when men, women and children die in that hellish place is one that begs acountability and pinning the tail on THAT donkey is no walk in the park. There's no escaping the fact that our uninvited, albeit well intentioned invasion has set off a continuous chain of death and destruction and there just is'nt any way to gloss it over. Proclaiming our mission to free the people from Saddam and give them the opportunity to establish a free and democratic government falls somewhat flat in the face of the ongoing civil war where the various religeous sects are unwilling to share such a government. While it may be debatable whether or not a time table for withdrawal should or not be set, one thing is for sure, a political solution must evolve soon. Finger pointing and political wrangling should be replaced with something that seems to be a foreign element in this conflict. Statesmanship.... and last but not least, accountability.
