Play by the rules

[Letter to USA Today]

It has long been the rallying cry of right wing conservatives to reject big government and its intrusiveness into our affairs and yet, they don't seem to have any problem favoring laws enacted to effect the personal conduct of our citizens in such matters as abortion, sexual preference and religious doctrine. I seriously question government's role or its right to involve itself in such matters. As long as we exist in such a diverse and convoluted society as ours there can never be a clear consensus as to the rightness or wrongness of these issues, nor should there be, as far as the government is concerned.

We have been led to believe that every citizen is guaranteed, under the constitution, the freedom to freely decide the conduct of his or her private life as long it doesn't infringe upon the rights of others or violate existing laws. We elect a government to manage the affairs of state, not the state of affairs of our people or from a pulpit of Washington's choosing. Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's and leave what isn't, alone.

George Morin
Auburn, Ga.
