Time to retrench?

Isolationism. Has the time finally arrived? After decades of America's involvement
in other country's affairs, often resulting in devastating outcomes, including loss
of lives, have we finally come to realize that we cannot be the conscience and policeman of the entire planet? The subject of isolationism has surfaced many times
and has generally been shrugged off as an unrealistic and unpopular idea, because
as the world's only super power (for now) we have an obligation to use our power and our wealth in preserving and forwarding the democratic and free market way of life to everyone including those who don't want it. Well, present circumstances attest to the
futility of that assumption, so what next? How about this scenario? The President of the United States goes to the United Nations and makes the following announcement.
"As of now, The United States of America announces to the nations and peoples of the world that it will refrain from any unasked for involvement in its affairs and in return will expect all violent acts against Americans to cease forthwith. We will leave you alone and you will leave us alone. Any continued violence from any ideological source against American citizens will be met with swift and decisive reprisal". A crazy idea? I'll be standing by to hear a better one.
