Tit for tat

The Republicans put on quite a show of outrage that some, if not all, Democrats had the unpatriotic audacity to question and criticize a war hero such as General Petraeus. I was half inclined to agree until I remembered how they savaged the military record of presidential candidate John Kerry during the last election. It never ceases to amaze me how the pots keep calling the kettles black. There was a similar flap when Dan Rather did an uncomplimentary and admittedly questionable report on President Bush's military service in the National Guard during the Vietnam War. There seemed to be some problem accurately pinning down his whereabouts at the time, although there were some sightings at his Texas ranch every so often. I don't see any point in going back and opening up that can of worms. Mr. Bush has since acquired a taste for war that he may have once lacked, especially now that he doesn't have to be personally engaged in one.himself. I would never suggest that he would'nt have acted in a heroic way back then if he had been sent into battle. We'll just never know, will we?
