Playing the Christian card

It was somewhat troubling to watch some of the presidential candidates trying
to enhance their chances by catering to the religious right with their claims of
faith, each one trying to out-Christian the other. Somehow this strikes me as
a pretty tacky way to get votes. I don't suppose they gave much thought to the fact
there are a great many non Christian voters out there who might feel neglected
and cast aside. We are, after all, seeking a president, not a religious leader, one to govern from the oval office, not the pulpit. We need to be very careful in choosing our leaders, that we don't trample on the basic tenets of our constitution when we do so. Personally, I'm inclined to get a little edgy around people who wear their faith on their sleeves and use it as a sales pitch to advance a selfish goal.I'm also getting a little tired of candidates reaching out to special interest groups and that includes organized religious ones, to seek benediction in pursuit of the White House. I want a leader that can stand on his own merits without need of props......or crutches of any kind.
