Veterans
Darrell Huckaby, in his column "Veterans the life blood of our nation", commemorated the veterans of past and present wars with great compassion and respect. It was a superb accolade to the men and women who served. I will admit that I was taken aback by the revelation that there were fewer than three million world war two veterans still among us. I just couldn't wrap my mind around that statistic, because as a veteran of that war, I don't understand how so many of us could have left us in such a relatively short time. I suppose its just a case of denial and the rejection of the inevitable and relentless passage of the years. Wars come and wars go and if there is one thing they all have in common, its the sad fact that they haven't shown us how to avoid the next one. After all the speeches are made and flags unfurled and bugles mournfully blown, there's the prevailing sadness of lost lives and lessons not learned. Still, if not for the men and women who believed in the virtues of duty and honor, we may well be standing in a darker place today. The future of our country and our children will depend upon how wisely we choose our leaders to-day.
