The clock ticks
The only re-action I had to President Bush's speech announcing the anniversary of the war in Iraq was one of anguish and despair. He is still stubbornly determined to sugar coat and justify his decision to invade that country and I am convinced, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary that it was a tragic mistake, he will never deviate from that course. Steadfastness is one thing, mule headed stubbornness is something else. There's all this talk about how the 'surge' is working and how fatalities have decreased, but just when you think things are improving, the country is wracked with a new series of suicidal explosions and assaults on our troops. There just isn't going to be any end to it until the duly elected, with our help, government of Iraq, brings the country together in a spirit of inclusiveness and power sharing that it has as of now, failed to do...and will continue fail to do as long it has the hired help on hand to do the heavy lifting. Guess who that might be? The idea of keeping American forces planted in that acrimonious environment indefinitely, or as Senator McCain would have it, for "another hundred years" is beyond comprehension. We are at a crossroads where wisdom and wise men should take the place of unbridled arrogance and those who believe that the solution to all problems comes from the barrel of a gun. The dawn of that day is still aborning. It can't come too soon.
