Defining ourselves

When ever I have been asked what my nationality was, my answer is always, "I am an American", Not, " I am a European American, or a German American or a French American, or a white American". Why then do we single out Americans of Asian or African ancestry by calling them Asian Americans or African Americans even when the families of the persons involved settled in this country generations ago? My point is that anyone born in this country is entitled to call himself an American, period.... unless he or she specifically prefers to put the country or continent of his or her ancestry up front. I wonder if this might contribute to-wards creating or widening a gap between us. Our ancestors, regardless of race, nationality or culture, came to these shores in pursuit of the American dream, to become citizens, American citizens. If they wanted to be otherwise they would have stayed where they were. Before someone beats me to it, I'll hasten to say there are those who only come to this country to avail themselves of its benefits and never intend to become citizens. My focus here is on those who come to stay. Its one thing for an African or Asian or Hispanic immigrant to define himself by the nationality of where he came from, but any children who are born here are Americans, first, last and always. I will probably never see the day, but it is my hope that the time will come when just calling ourselves Americans, without the sub titles,. will be good enough. Just the thought of calling myself a European French ,German white American makes my skin crawl. Its not that I disown my heritage, it's just that it is no longer relevant. I am an AMERICAN, PERIOD!

Wow, this really stood out to me.
I guess I never really took it in that even though their skin or ethnicity is different from our own, still doesn't mean that they're American.

I guess a lot of people just assume that if you're black, you're from Africa.
And, if you're asian, that you're from China.

It shows, somewhat, how shallow some Americans can be.
It's an eye-opener, to say the least.

Much love,

Interesting
I think if we start to call ourselves "Americans" no matter if you are African or whatever your nationality is that we will form a UNITY amongst ourselves by preventing ourselves from calling people Americans with subtitles.

Dear MR. MORIN,

Really I think that many "Americans" just are afraid to admit to what their history is like. Just because some race did something bad in the past does not mean that they will always be like that after so many generations. Maybe people put subtitles to "American" to remind them that, that one race did something horrific in their past.

Also China is not the only part of Asia. I mean many grown "Americans" just do not see that Asia contains countries like Russia, Iran, and Thailand. I guess in some cases that as the older people get the more they become shallow. Translated into as people grow older and hate more, they tend to believe in anything bad about the people that they hate and forget about the big picture.

There might be several reasons that people refer to themselves by their heritage. In these days of genealogical research being so popular many people do now refer to themselves as Irish American, Swedish American or Korean American to honor our ancestors. The problem is that most of us are really a little of many heritages, so that is not accurate. As we know, a person's skin color does not indicate where they were born or even where their parents were born. It certainly would be easier if we were all just called Americans.
I think many older people are really very accepting of immigrants and try to help them perhaps because they remember the stories of their grandparents coming to this country and some of the things they had to suffer.
I have been researching about my relatives and cannot believe the tough times they went through, but they perservered and we descendants are glad they did.
One of the really great things about this country is supposed to be that all people are to have a chance. They need to work for it but we should be willing to offer a little help when needed.
