Why aren't we screaming?

Not too long ago, there were letters to the editor that attempted to explain and justify the incredible profits that big oil companies are garnering while most of us are writhing in pain at the pump. We are told that these companies need these humongous profits to pay for research and development, not to mention locating new oil fields to exploit globally. I'd say that 'exploit' is the right word if it correctly targets we the people as the 'exploitees'. Now I understand that Opec and other major oil producing nations set the price for crude by the barrel, but doesn't the price per gallon at the pump fall within the bailiwick of our own generous-to-a-fault major oil companies? If oil is in such short supply that prices are catapulted into the stratosphere, how can it be that only the consumer bears the brunt and the shortage doesn't eat into the profits of the guys that sell it to us? Shortages mean less product sold, less profit made...or does it? Am I being unbelievably naive to suggest that it does not make economical sense for profits to soar for those paragons of fairness while the rest of us have to find creative ways to leave the driving to somebody else. At these prices, what I'll pay for gas this year will exceed what I paid for the damned car.

We agree with you! Why is it that the consumers have to suffer while oil companies make record profits? It seems like the environment could be the one thing besides the oil companies that benefit from people being forced to drive less and carpool. If gas goes up high enough could we see unemployment rise as people have a hard time getting to work? However, this could force people to make better choices about how they spend money but would affect all areas of the economy a genuine chain reaction:( If oil prices are going to keep going up then wages should go up as well.

This makes me mad. It reminds me of the Industrial Age. My class is at an age now where gas prices measure our amount of freedom. my question is in your opinion how do you lower gas prices? Because in some ways the big businesses are "untouchable". with all the corruption in the government and the masive amount of money the oil industry has what should we do?

Same here. i know that barrell prices are high but why does gas has to be the same way.My class is in the age of everthing is cheap after World war I. But at his point in time we must hope that the prices go down but that may be up to compaines and not our government which mean prices can stay high for a while.

This is completely true. Oil companies exploiting the consumers to gain profit. It seems immoral, but greed is becoming too common of a characteristic in America. The worst part is not a huge amount has been done in order for the average American to get around the price of gas. Hybrids are becoming more common, but some of the ones I have seen to cost more than what its worth. If gas prices continue at the same pace then the economy could stop growing due to the lack of money in order to purchase things, such as food.

Dear MR. MORIN,

What would happen if the corporate leaders gain all the money in the United States? What is stopoing us, the working class, from boycotting the currency if all the money goes into the hands of the corporate leaders? Of course in "reality people" can never unite together to end an economic need. There will always be people who will stand on the corporates' side being persuade with false hopes and ideas.

Another piont of view might argue that the businesses aren't making much profit from the current prices and have to raise them to pay their employees.

One solution that might be our only chance to evade global warming is that we lead a example in not using oil as a major part of our economy. I don't see why we just can't convert the recent vehicles to be solar powered. Japan has done it in less than 3 years. The majority of Japan cars can be powered by solar power and oil. The arguement against that might be that the looks will be awkward. The truth is that the vehicles that are converted to solar power will look the same and be just as powerful if not more. There are new solar power panels that looks just like regular car parts. Of course there will have to be a new education in the field of solar energy powered cars instead of oil powered cars.

Hopefully corporate leaders in the oil industry will realize that they must cut off unmandatory expenses from themselves before coming to attack the working class's wages.

THANK YOU,
PHENG VUE

I agree with you Mr. Morin.
Why should we, the consumers, have to suffer while the oil company horts in large amounts of money ?
Not only are we using up precious fossil fuel, we are also causing high tensions throughout out the world with the struggle of controlling the oil companies.

If the prices of gas and oil continue to rise, it would also be fair if the wages of workers to rise as well.

This just makes you want to go back to the times before cars and oil, and back to horse in buggy.
[thats not going to happen though]

I absolutely agree with you, Mr. Morin. A few days ago I was reading an internet petition which claimed Exxon/Mobile recently retired their CEO with a retirement package which amounts to over $400,000,000. I haven't done much research into it as of yet, but I found that to be rather startling. The aforementioned petition called for consumers to check to see where gas stations got their gas before filling up in a boycott of Exxon Gas. Though a noble idea, the solution seems to lack pragmatism. Most people are in a hurry when they stop to get gas and don't have time to find a station which doesn't sell Exxon gasoline. The only practical solution to the high prices would be a switch to alternative energy sources such as solar powered and electric cars. In case you want to look at that petition, here is the link.
