The Importance of being Ernest

Ernest Wade, frequent contributor to this column, wrote a response to my letter wherein I opined that right wing media attacks on Democratic presidential candidates have been much harsher than those of the liberal left on Republican candidate, John McCain, Mr. Wade pointed out that once the Democratic nominee has been established, this would change and the liberal media would jump right in and launch equally or even more hostile attacks on McCain. My letter acknowledged that both sides were equally guilty when they engaged in unnecessary character assassination and the nation would not be well served when they did so.Mr. wade, however, took a giant step over the line when he suggested that the so called liberal' press would actually demean and belittle the Senator's wartime imprisonment during the Vietnam war. I don't really believe Mr. wade seriously thinks that even the "liberal media' would sink so low or be so stupid as to go that route, although there were those that didn't hesitate to try to trash Sen. John Kerry's war record during the last Presidential election. To me, this is just another example of 'over the top' rhetoric that needs to be reined in and stifled. I don't suppose this is much further off the wall though than the suggestion that Sen. obama, if elected, would immediately turn the government over to Osama Bin Laden. We live in strange times. I think Ernest would agree with me on that.
