A note in passing

Well, another Memorial Day has come and gone and with it the usual combination of sorrow and celebration. We mourned the loss of those who died serving our country
and swelled with pride as our military might paraded through our towns and cities. We
exulted in our strength while at the same time denouncing the ongoing need to debilitate it in wars on distant shores. Patriotic speeches abounded throughout the land and promises were made that our brave men and woman will not have died in vain.......and yet the thought that gnawed at me was the sadness on the faces of those left behind when the voices of the political speech makers rang hollow in their ears. I do not deny the need to venerate and honor the memory of those that served. I only reject the notion that the leaders of the nations of this world can find no better way to govern than through a never ending orgy of senseless wars. Of course it would be naive of me to hope that this past Memorial Day will have been the last one we'll celebrate while our young men and women remained in harms way, but despite my natural tendancy to doubt the motives of self serving politicians, there may yet be a light at the end of the tunnel. We'll just have to wait and see,
