Cal Thomas in concert

It never ceases to amaze me how any newspaper, regardless of it's political leanings, can in all candor, showcase the rantings of Cal Thomas in full Bible thumping mode. In Thomas's recent column, "Obama the false prophet on the ballot", his unbelievable conclusion that Obama is not a Christian because he believes that people of all faiths are equal in the sight of God. Thomas states that, "Evangelicals and serious Catholics might ask if this is so why did Jesus waste his time, coming to earth, suffering pain, rejection and crucifixion". Why indeed, Mr. Thomas, since there were no such things as Evangelicals and Catholics in the world. Does anyone really think Jesus arrived in this world planning on sacrificing himself by dying on a cross? I don't know where Mr. Thomas gets off spouting his interpretation of a faith that rejects all others save his and contends that regardless of how spotlessly clean a person lives in this world, unless he embraces Jesus as his saviour, he will not be welcomed into the kingdom of God. I realize that pretty much sizes up what a lot of people accept as gospel, but there is a broader concept that God does not confine his love and acceptance to any one particular religious sect. Since I am not privy to the inner thoughts of the Creator, nor is Cal Thomas or anyone else, I'll have to just fall back on what feels right to me .All this aside, I do not know of any place in our constitution that says an elected President of the United states has to conform to any religious faith, Evangelical or otherwise. He must see that there is a clear separation of Church and state as outlined in the constitution and that no American citizen should be persecuted for exercising his or her beliefs or lack of same. Cal Thomas goes way over the top when he tries to sit in judgement on Senator Obama's religious credentials. He just isn't entitled or more importantly, qualified ,to do that. Let's leave the self-styled religious pundits in their pulpits and off the editorial pages of our newspapers.
