Mindless rhetoric abounds

Saxby Chambliss, in his latest attack on his opponent for the U.S. senate, Jim Martin, has, in my mind, "crossed the Rubicon" in terms of outlandish rhetoric. If it wasn't such a sad display of desperation, it would be almost laughable that Chambliss considers the idea of bringing unions to Georgia, as he claims Martin would do, was reason enough to disqualify his (Martins) candidacy. Chambliss went on to point out incidents of union corruption, while side-stepping the fact that the lack of unions in southern companies left workers in that region among the poorest paid in the nation. Sure there was corruption and gangster involvement in some unions at one time or other, but certainly no more so than exist in some of the largest companies in the country. My point is that, after a mutually vicious campaign in which Chambliss and Martin tore each other's character to shreds, that it would come down to such mundane, overworked trivia. Unions can only exist and function, for better or for worse, at the will of the employees. It's too bad that political candidates for office can't seem to resist insulting the intelligence of the voters. It's even more unfortunate that the candidates themselves shouldn't have to pass an intelligence test to be allowed on anybody's ticket.
