A time to straddle the fence
It so happens that Presidents find themselves all too often damned for the decisions they make and damned for the decisions they don't make. A good case in point is the dilemma President Obama is faced with regarding the recent elections in Iran. On the one hand he is bound not to appear invasive into a sovereign nation's business and at the same time deal with factions in this country who feel that every other country's business IS our business, including those who are not bosom 'buddies' with our government. There is little doubt that this is no easy matter to confront., but as every U.S. president in recent times has had to face at one time or another, there is no where to hide when having to come down on one side or the other. In this particular case, I belive President Obama would be wise to maintain a neutral position until all the facts are in regarding the legitimacy of the election and whether a large percentage of the voters of Iran hold fast in the belief that it was not..Change should come from within. We would certainly expect that to be the case if we were ever caught up in the same possibly explosive situation. When the vote is close and the country is evenly divided , it would probably preclude a violent resolution........but when there is a wide gap in the acceptance or non acceptance of the results, a revolution could be the culmination and we would be well advised to steer clear and stand ready to help restore order, but by invitation only.
