Failure to communicate
The letters to the the editor column was intended to be a way for readers to submit their opinions freely and openly in a civil and intelligent way without resorting to name calling and character trashing, an attempt to enlighten and hopefully bring mutual benefit to one and all. Yeah right. What we generally see falls a tad short in that department, because we're so intent in wallowing in our own prejudicial rhetoric that we don't even recognize the existence of other points of view. You are either a right wing nut or a liberal fanatic, a tax and spend fool or a selfish" I'm only my brothers keeper if it doesn't cost me anything" zealot. Frankly, I for one would like to see a reader up-rising resulting in more listening and less talking, more 'let's make a deal' and less 'my way or the highway'. Okay. I'm probably an old fool wishing on a rainbow, but what the hell.
